Sewing Cheat Sheet

A simple guide for crafters

Basic Stitches:

  • Straight Stitch: Strongest, most common stitch for joining fabrics.
  • Zigzag Stitch: Finishing raw edges to prevent fraying.
  • Backstitch: Secures the beginning and end of seams to prevent unraveling.
  • Basting Stitch: Temporary stitch for holding fabrics together, easily removed later.

Seam Finishes:

  • Pinked Seam: Raw edges cut with pinking shears to reduce fraying (lightweight fabrics).
  • Serged Seam: Finished with a serger machine for a professional look (optional for home sewing).
  • French Seam: Encases raw edges for a clean finish (more time-consuming).

Needle & Thread:

  • Needle Size: Use the appropriate needle size for your fabric weight. (Larger numbers for thicker fabrics).
  • Thread Color: Match thread color to fabric or use a neutral color for general sewing.

Measurements & Markings:

  • Seam Allowance: The extra fabric added when sewing seams (usually 1/2″ or 5/8″).
  • Marking Tools: Fabric pen, tailor’s chalk, or pins to mark sewing lines.

Tips:

  • Pre-wash Fabric: Prevents shrinkage and ensures accurate measurements.
  • Iron Seams Open: Flattens seams for a professional finish.
  • Press as you Go: Iron seams after sewing for a crisp look.
  • Read the Pattern: Follow pattern instructions carefully, especially for beginners.
  • Start with Simple Projects: Build your skills with beginner-friendly patterns.
