How to make a shawl scarf (sewing)

Making a shawl scarf can be a fun and rewarding DIY project. Here’s a simple guide to help you make a basic shawl scarf:

Materials:

  1. Fabric: Choose a fabric that suits the season and your preferences. Common choices include knit, fleece, or cotton. The amount of fabric you need depends on the size of the shawl you want.
  2. Sewing machine or needle and thread: You can either hand-sew or use a sewing machine, depending on your preference and skill level.
  3. Scissors
  4. Pins

Steps:

  1. Choose Your Fabric:
    • Decide on the type of fabric you want for your shawl scarf. Consider the warmth, texture, and drape of the fabric based on the season and your style preference.
  2. Measure and Cut:
    • Determine the desired length and width of your shawl scarf. Standard measurements for a shawl scarf are around 60-70 inches long and 20-30 inches wide, but you can adjust these according to your preference.
    • Use a measuring tape and mark the dimensions on your chosen fabric.
    • Cut the fabric along the marked lines using scissors.
  3. Fold and Pin:
    • Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides facing each other. This means the side you want to show on the outside should be on the inside at this point.
    • Pin the edges together to secure them for sewing.
  4. Sew the Edges:
    • If you are using a sewing machine, sew along the open edges, leaving a small seam allowance (usually around 1/2 inch). If you are hand-sewing, use a straight stitch and sew along the edges.
    • Be sure to leave a small opening (a few inches) along one edge to turn the scarf right side out.
  5. Turn Right Side Out:
    • Reach inside the opening and carefully turn the scarf right side out. Use a blunt tool, like the back of a pencil, to gently push out the corners and edges.
  6. Hand Stitch the Opening:
    • After turning the scarf right side out, hand stitch the opening closed using a slip stitch or a whip stitch.
  7. Press and Finish:
    • Press the scarf with an iron to smooth out any wrinkles and give it a polished look.
    • You can add any additional embellishments, such as fringe or decorative trims, if you desire.
  8. Optional Embellishments:
    • If you want to add fringe or other decorative elements, now is the time to do so. You can sew on pre-made fringe or create your own by cutting strips of fabric and attaching them to the edges.

Remember to personalise your shawl scarf to suit your style and preferences. Feel free to experiment with different fabrics, colors, and embellishments to make it uniquely yours!

Keep on crafting.
